Applied Sciences at the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém (Day 2 in Lisbon)
Following an insightful first day in Lisbon, the PJ-D-VET consortium hit the road on Day 2. Departing from Técnico Lisbon in the morning, the delegation traveled to the Ribatejo region for an immersive visit to the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém.
Fostering Regional Development Through Education
Founded in 1979, this public higher education institution serves approximately 5,000 students across five specialized schools located in Santarém and Rio Maior. The visit allowed the consortium to witness firsthand the institute’s strong dedication to education, research, and community service.
During the session, the PJ-D-VET partners explored how the institute drives the region’s economic and social strategy. Highlights of the visit included:
- Diverse Educational Pathways: The institute provides a comprehensive range of programs, from bachelor’s and master’s degrees to highly relevant short-cycle professional courses, which directly align with vocational education and training principles.
- Innovation in Key Sectors: A strong focus on applied science and innovation-driven projects in specific regional fields, such as agriculture, sports science, and sustainable growth.
- Bridging Academia and Industry: Clear examples of how the institute ensures a strong, seamless connection between theoretical academic knowledge and the practical demands of the local labor market.
Day 2 provided the consortium with a valuable look at how higher education institutions outside major metropolitan centers successfully boost local economies and create tangible career opportunities for their students.
