A Comprehensive Look at Vocational Training and Inclusion in Cascais (Day 3 in Lisbon)
For the third day of the study visit, the PJ-D-VET delegation, comprising teachers from partner entities, representatives from the Ministries of Education, teaching accreditation agencies, and stakeholders from Chambers of Commerce and Industry, traveled to the coastal municipality of Cascais. This action-packed day provided a holistic view of the Portuguese VET ecosystem, covering public schools, state-run rehabilitation centers, and municipal career initiatives.
Morning: Hands-On Engineering at Escola Matilde Rosa Araújo
The day kicked off with a visit to the Mechatronics School in São Domingos de Rana. The consortium observed a dynamic, three-year technical professional course that blends theoretical foundations (diagnostics, systems analysis, and schematics) with practical skills like assembly and testing. Key takeaways from this visit included:
- Applied Innovation: The program culminates in impressive, community-visible achievements, such as a fully functional student-built vehicle prototype.
- Industry Alignment: With strong ties to the automotive sector, the school ensures high career readiness by developing real skills in mechanics, electronics, and automation.
Early Afternoon: Skilling and Inclusion at IEFP Alcoitão
After lunch, partners visited the Centro de Formação e Reabilitação Profissional de Alcoitão, operated by Portugal’s public employment and training institute (IEFP). This center plays a vital role in the national VET strategy by supporting social inclusion and requalification to help individuals enter or re-enter the labor market. During the session, the Portuguese vocational training system was presented with a special focus on Level 5 educational pathways. The delegation also toured the center’s laboratories and workshop spaces, allowing for direct contact with the methodologies, equipment, and training practices developed on-site for both youth and adults.
Late Afternoon: Lifelong Learning at Cascais Occupations’ City
The professional agenda concluded at the Cidade das Profissões de Cascais (Cascais Occupations’ City). Promoted by the local municipality and part of the International Network of Cities of Professions, this free, open space demonstrated how local governments can support career development. The center provides inclusive services accessible to everyone, including migrants and people with disabilities, facilitating job searches, training access, and lifelong career planning.
